The Peking University International Innovation Center, Lin-gang Special Area, China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone (the Center) secured its license in February this year after the project contract was signed in March 2021, and then preparations for its opening commenced. The Center was registered as an organization by the end of April. A preliminary team was formed, dozens of scientific research projects went into the reservoir, and several conversion projects of sci-tech deliverables moved to the stage of move-in confirmation. The 12,000-sqm office building is ready for decorations. The convergence media matrix of the Center is on track to be completed soon. Some top investment institutions and leading industry players have set out to build connections and seek cooperation opportunities…From “Step out” to “Start a sprint”, the Peking University International Innovation Center, Lin-gang Special Area moved to the acceleration stage from the preparation stage in June.

Strive to build a landmark project of university-city cooperation

Shanghai is China’s international finance, trade and sci-tech innovation hub, while the Lin-gang Special Area, China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone represents a major strategic move to further expand Shanghai’s opening-up and an important base for international innovation collaboration. The inauguration of the Peking University International Innovation Center, Lin-gang Special Area marks another significant step taken by PKU in the Yangtze River Delta region, with the support of the Shanghai municipal government and the Lin-gang Special Area Administration.

Leverage the ideal resource endowments and innovation elements offered by Lin-gang

With a future-proof development philosophy defined by “Differentiation, Digitalization, Greenness and Internationalization”, Lin-gang focuses on “4+2+x” frontier industrial clusters. By 2025, the Lin-gang Special Area will endeavor to grow the total value of the frontier industries to about RMB 600 billion and to form 3 to 5 industrial clusters in the RMB 100-billion range.

For these purposes, Lin-gang accords all-dimensional resources, plus pilot policies, a supportive business environment and flexible talent policies.

Opening-up, innovation and coordinated development

With the major industries envisaged for Lin-gang in mind, the Center will deploy innovation chain, capital chain, talent chain, and policy chain around the industrial chains, so as to produce more innovations. By means of deep nurturing and financial support, it will step up the conversion of sci-tech deliverables, incubate high-tech firms and build itself into a first-rated sci-tech innovation platform of global impact, thus serving to fuel growth of the industries in the Lin-gang Special Area and contributing to the building of Shanghai into a global leading sci-tech innovation hub. In addition, the Center will leverage PKU’s research resources and alumni resources to provide the teams moving into the Center with a full range of high-quality services and support, and to drive scientific research advancement and conversion of results.
