From June 20th to June 21st, Peking University Shanghai Lin-gang International Science and Technology Innovation Center (hereafter PKU-IICSH) successfully organized a study tour in collaboration with the junior high school division of East Shanghai High School. Over 600 students and teachers from the pre-junior and 7th grade levels participated in the study tour. PKU-IICSH designed various activities tailored to students' interests, focusing on cultural heritage and scientific innovation spirit, through which students gained insights into the culture and history of Peking University and experienced the scientific and innovative atmosphere at PKU-IICSH firsthand.
During the visit, students were guided through the “PWA Instrumentation & Service Center for Biomedicine”, the first multifunctional biomedical public experimental platform in downtown Lin-gang, gathering resources from Peking University, The World Laureates Association (WLA) Shanghai Center, and The ATLATL Center for Innovation & Research.
Through activities such as observing under microscopes, using pipettes, and learning about the functions of professional experimental facilities and equipment, students acquired fundamental knowledge of life sciences and realized the importance of technology and the power of innovation, which fostered their enthusiasm toward scientific research.
In the Party-Mass Service Hall on the first floor of PKU-IICSH, the teachers introduced students to the history and culture of Peking University, spanning from its glorious traditions of "patriotism, progress, democracy, and science" to its fine ethos of “Follow the principle of freedom of thoughts - with an all-embracing attitude”, and from its numerous achievements reached under Boya Pagoda, Beijing to its ongoing contributions made beside Dishui Lake, Shanghai. The activity engaged students in communication with Peking University that transcended time and space and deepened their understanding of the mission of building Lin-gang Special Area as the new generation born and raised in the area, fostering their patriotic sentiments.
The event not only enhanced students' understanding and awareness of sci-tec innovation and promoted “The Spirit of Peking University”, but also encouraged them to aspire to greatness from a young age, embodying the Peking University motto of “Keep your eyes on the stars, and your feet on the ground” in their daily studies and lives, nurturing them to become capable talents needed by our nation.
As one of the first institutions successfully applying for the Shanghai Youth Innovation Laboratory in Lin-gang Special Area, PKU-IICSH will continue to serve as an off-campus education base and scientific experience center for youth activities and practice in scientific and technological innovation by establishing public experimental platforms. Furthermore, by focusing on science popularization activities and using youth science popularization projects as a demonstration, PKU-IICSH will integrate resources from Peking University and its partners in scientific innovation to gradually establish a network for youth science popularization and further enhance its function of serving scientific innovation and the community.
