Last night (April 29), the 21st Peking University Dishui Lake Lecture Hall was successfully held. Zhang Ping, Professor at Peking University Law School and Director of the Center for AI Safety and Governance at Peking University's Institute of Artificial Intelligence, was invited to deliver a special lecture titled Human-Centered, Beneficial AI: Exploring Ethical Governance of Artificial Intelligence at the Dishui Lake Theater.

Prof. Zhang commenced her analysis with globally prominent AI ethical incidents, delving into tangible risks embedded within technological advancement. Through representative cases, she exposed the impacts of deepfake technology across political, judicial, and financial domains. She emphasized that AI ethical challenges have evolved from initial concerns over privacy breaches and algorithmic black boxes to contemporary issues like deepfakes and public opinion manipulation during the strong artificial intelligence phase. Looking forward, the era of superintelligent AI will confront deeper systemic challenges—such as intelligent divides and threats to human existential security.

Prof. Zhang compared the artificial intelligence governance approaches of China, the European Union, and the United States, delving into the institutional frameworks for AI ethical review. She systematically interpreted the governance logic of "Human-Centered, Beneficial AI," ultimately emphasizing that profound technological iterations must integrate humanistic care embedded in ethical governance. Such integration should align with socio-economic and cultural values to propel AI development toward an upward trajectory grounded in the purpose of "goodness."

During the Q&A session, the audience actively engaged with pressing topics such as "Chinese enterprises' deep participation in global open-source projects" and "whether artificial intelligence can replace basic education." Professor Zhang Ping emphasized the urgent need to accelerate the development of China's autonomous open-source ecosystem and establish an open-source license system aligned with domestic legal frameworks to ensure technological security and sustainable development. Regarding education, she clarified: "Training in logical thinking and ethical awareness within basic education remains irreplaceable." While AI tools can significantly enhance learning efficiency, she stressed that future education must prioritize "cultivating the ability to collaborate with AI" rather than merely pursuing the accumulation of knowledge.

Tang Hao, Member of the Party working committee of Lin-gang Special Area and Deputy Director of Lin-gang Special Area Administration, presented Prof. Zhang with a commemorative plaque for the lecture. Nearly 300 attendees participated on-site, while new media platforms cumulatively attracted over 3,000 online viewer engagements for the lecture.

Before the lecture, Prof. Zhang conducted an on-site inspection of PKU-IICSH, visited the Party-Mass Service Center and PWA Instrumentation & Service Center for Biomedicine, and offered his kind guidance to the center's development.
