From August 5 to 6, 2024 Peking University Ordos Energy Forum and Peking University Alumni Visit to Ordos was successfully held in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The forum was initiated by Peking University Ordos Research Institute of Energy and co-hosted by Peking University Alumni Association and Office of Science and Technology Development, Peking University and undertaken by Union of Finance Alumni of Peking University(UFAPKU) and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Peking University Alumni Association. Several other institutions co-organized the forum including Institute of Energy, Peking University, School of Earth and Space Sciences, Peking University, School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Peking University, Peking University Lin-gang International S&T Innovation Center (PKU-IICSH), Peking University Entrepreneur’s Training Camp, Committee of Resources and Environment of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Peking University Alumni Association, and Shanghai Yanyuan Private Equity Fund Management Co., Ltd. (Yanyuan Fund).
As one of the main events of the 12th Inner Mongolia “Grassland Talent” High-end Talent Cooperation Conference hosted in Ordos, the “2024 Peking University Ordos Energy Forum” focused on “New Quality Productive Forces Promote High-Quality Development of the Energy Economy.” The forum brought together renowned scholars, industry leaders, and government officials from the energy sectors nationwide, integrating various topics, including energy technology, projects, financial investment, innovation and entrepreneurship, and achievement transformation.
The opening ceremony of 2024 Peking University Ordos Energy Forum and Peking University Alumni Visit to Ordos was officially held on the morning of August 5. Gao Wenhe, Member of the Standing Committee and Chief of the Organization Department of the CPC Ordos Municipal Committee, and Piao Shilong, Vice President of Peking University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), delivered their opening speech. Two parallel forums were held in the afternoon of August 5, respectively focusing on “Opportunities and Challenges in Energy Technology Development under the Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality Goals” and “Technological Innovation Leading New Opportunities in Energy Investment.”
Nine scholars and experts attended the first forum and shared their perspectives on the forum theme “Opportunities and Challenges in Energy Technology Development under the Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality Goals" (i.e., "dual carbon" goals.) Qi Lu, a professor from Peking University and Commissioner of Zhongguancun New Battery Technology Innovation Alliance and Beijing Power Supply Association, gave a keynote speech about several considerations for developing clean energy storage and making coal-fired power greener. Li Fujian, Assistant President and General Manager of Technology and Information Department of China Energy Engineer Group Hydrogen Energy Co., Ltd, presented the development and industry layout of China Energy Engineer Group Hydrogen Energy Co., Ltd,. Ma Ding, a doctoral supervisor of Peking University, Peking University Boya Chair Professor, and Researcher of College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Peking University, shared the procedure of hydrogen production through activating and catalyzing low-temperature water. Huang Yunhui, a professor and doctoral supervisor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, introduced lithium-ion batteries and new electrochemical energy storage systems. Chen Qiaoling, Chief Economist of BP China, talked via online video about green energy's role in the world energy transition. Li Qilin, Chairman of China Environment Chamber of Commerce and CEO of Beijing SPC Environment Protection Tech Co., Ltd delivered a speech on the trend of integrating environmental protection and energy-saving technologies against the backdrop of "dual carbon" goal. Li Wei, Director of the Technology R&D Department at Carbon Neutrality Development Research Institute of CPECC, shared his idea of developing advanced energy technology to meet the "dual carbon" strategy. Huang Dubin, founder and Chairman of Golden Feather, discussed the industrial application of solid-state batteries. Zhou Min, CEO of Yichuang New Energy Technology Co., Ltd, expounded on the development and application of the aqueous metal batteries industry. Hao Hongliang, Vice Dean of Peking University Ordos Research Institute of Energy, hosted the forum.
The second forum invited four experts to give keynote speeches on the forum theme “Technological Innovation Leading New Opportunities in Energy Investment.” He Ran, the first Executive Secretary of China Smart Energy Industry Alliance, shared his point of view on how the new energy technology revolution will lead a billion-dollar industry chain. Liu Feng, Chief Economists of International Institute of Green Finance (IIGF), Central University of Finance and Economics, delivered a speech about the crux of capital market and energy structure transition. Ren Yuda, Managing Director of the Investment Department of National Green Development Fund (NGDF) elaborated on the business practice of NGDF. Hu Yuchen, Founding Partner of Fresh Capital, discussed the new energy investment opportunities as the carbon market changes. Xie Xiaogang, Vice Dean of Peking University Ordos Research Institute of Energy, hosted the forum.
After the keynote speeches, ten outstanding energy science and technology innovation projects were selected for roadshows at the event, where experienced experts including Ren Yuda, Managing Director of the Investment Department of NGDF, Rao Xueying, Partner of GP Capital Shanghai Jinke Fund, and Li Jun, General Manager and Managing Partner of Yanyuan Fund, provided on-site guidance and advice to these projects.

On the afternoon of August 4, the "Enterprise and Ordos City Government Cooperation Meeting," organized by the Ordos Municipal People’s Government, was successfully held. The meeting discussed project investment and policy support from the Ordos Municipal. After guests introduced their projects, discussions and exchanges took place between the two parties. The meeting was chaired by Li Ruiming, a level-three consultant from the Ordos Municipal People’s Government.
Guest Networking Dinner:
This forum event was not only a significant gathering in the energy industry but also a "two-way journey" for alumni of Peking University in the energy industry to connect with Ordos City. On the evening of August 5, Peking University alumni and forum guests deepened their mutual understanding through a networking dinner, promoting further communication and collaboration. Li Wensheng, Secretary-General of the Beijing University Alumni Association and Director of the Alumni Working Office, Ma Kaihua, Executive Vice Dean of Peking University Ordos Research Institute of Energy, Wang Xinru, Director of the Office of Off-Campus Research Institution Management of Office of Science and Technology Development, Peking University, and Wei Ranfeng, President of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Peking University Alumni Association gave their speeches on behalf of the organizer they represented. The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Peking University Alumni Association's art troupe and Resource and Environment Professional Committee also performed ethnically distinctive and wonderful programs at the dinner.

On the morning of August 6, warmly welcomed by Peking University Ordos Research Institute of Energy, visiting leaders and guests paid a visit to the Peking University Ordos Research Institute of Energy, Ordos Talent Innovation Center, and Ordos High-tech Industrial Development Zone, fully experiencing the unique sci-tech innovation environment of Ordos.
Themed around "New Quality Productive Forces Promote High-Quality Development of the Energy Economy," the "2024 Peking University Ordos Energy Forum and Peking University Alumni Visit to Ordos" was successfully held, attracting nearly 500 experts and scholars from various sectors to engage in in-depth discussions and practical exchanges on energy topics. The forum promoted Ordos's cultural landscape, technological innovation, and economic development nationwide through Peking University's resources, enhancing understanding of the city among politicians, academics, business, and industry circles. The forum introduced the exploration and practice of Peking University Ordos Research Institute of Energy and received numerous constructive insights, suggestions, and solutions from industry experts regarding the energy structure transformation of Ordos, which will serve as valuable references and guidance for Ordos's future development. Many projects recommended at the forum gained attention from investment institutions, with some showing interest in settling in Ordos, which will support Ordos's high-quality development.
